WHO ARE WE AT SECOND PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH?

Basically, we are a church family striving to move forward in our personal and corporate Christian lives. We are called Presbyterians because of our form of church government, which is representative (a government of Elders) and because of our Reformed doctrine. We believe in the sovereign majesty of God, in Jesus Christ as the Head of our church, in the Holy Spirit as the power for transformation and ministry in our lives, and in the Bible as our rule of faith and practice.

We hold no allusions to super-sainthood. We have, however, experienced the One whose loving grace has touched and changed our lives. But that grace is neither deserved nor controlled by us. We simply want to share with all, through our redeemed humanity, the love and wonder of Jesus Christ.

We believe God’s blessings obligate us to share the Good News of His salvation in word and in deed. We are involved in many forms of ministry to one another, to the community, and even to people worldwide. Our hope is that you will become involved with us.

OUR HISTORY

Second Presbyterian Church was established in February 1899. The first house of worship was located at Roanoke Avenue and Twenty-sixth Street, Newport News. In March 1904, we moved into a facility on Twenty-fourth Street; and then in 1952, to a church plant in Stuart Gardens. The present facilities were dedicated in March 1969. We have had fourteen pastors and four interim pastors since our first worship service. Rev. Robin Wooddell began his ministry as our Interim Pastor on October 1, 2007.

Our church conducts a non-profit, self-supporting preschool for church members and community. A Board, made up of members of the church, oversees it. The Director is Tammy Castagna. Classes for two and a half, three, and four year olds meet September through May, from 9:15 A.M. until 12:15 P.M., Monday—Friday.
